TAP HOLE CLAY
Tap Hole Clay Manufacturer
Tap Hole Clay is a refractory material used to seal the tap hole of a blast furnace during the smelting process. It is a key material for smooth furnace operation. Its main functions include filling and sealing the tap hole, stabilizing the iron tapping process, protecting the hearth (the bottom of the furnace), forming the tap hole mud bag, and maintaining stable blast furnace conditions.
During tapping, Tap Hole Clay acts like a valve. The tap hole is opened to release iron, then promptly sealed afterward. It is crucial to ensure a complete seal throughout the tapping process.
With the rapid development of the steel industry, blast furnaces are becoming larger, lasting longer, and smelting more intensively. Consequently, the performance requirements for taphole clay are increasingly stringent. Modern taphole clay needs good workability (for both filling and opening), air permeability, sintering properties, compatibility between new and old clay, and resistance to corrosion and erosion. Particularly important are short splash time and minimal expansion during tapping, along with a slow erosion rate.

The composition of Tap Hole Clay mainly includes refractory aggregates and binding agents. The refractory aggregates are usually composed of refractory raw materials such as corundum, mullite, and coke, as well as modified materials such as coke and mica. The binding agents can be water or tar asphalt and Organic materials such as phenolic resin. In addition, the production process of cannon mud includes premixing of raw materials, adding binders, extrusion and molding, etc.
Tap Hole Clay is divided into three types according to its binder:
1. Water Tap Hole Clay uses water as a binding agent.
2. Waterless Tap Hole Clay uses tar, anthracite oil, resin and other organic materials as binding agents.
3. Special Tap Hole Clay using special organic materials as binders, such as: Environmentally Tap Hole Clay.

Advantages of Tap Hole Clay
Since the quality of our products is of particular importance to us, our products comply with the highest requirements of currently valid standards.
- Good workability
- Easily pushed out of tap hole clay
- And has high filling density and good opening performance.
- The drill bit of the opening machine is easy to penetrate when opening.
- Resistant to erosion and erosion of high temperature iron
- Good volume stability, that is, small volume change under high temperature conditions.
- It has high refractoriness, >1580℃ and has certain plasticity at normal temperature.
Effect:
- Waterless tap hole clay is made of new refractory materials and has extremely high strength. A small amount of mud can ensure the depth of the tap hole. It is resistant to high temperatures, resistant to slag iron erosion, does not stick to slag iron, and does not need to be baked, making the maintenance of the tap hole very convenient.
- The iron flow is stable, and accidents are less likely to occur. Due to its high strength, the diameter of the taphole drilled with drill pipes always remains the same size, ensuring uniform flow of molten iron and avoiding accidents such as large flows, slag flooding, and blasting. At the same time, it also greatly reduces the labor intensity of workers.
- Ensure clean slag iron is produced and promote smooth furnace conditions. Under normal circumstances, after using waterless tao hole clay, the hole diameter of the iron mouth is smaller than when using water tap hole clay Under the same pressure, waterless tap hole clay can fully ensure that the blast furnace produces clean slag iron, making the furnace space large and active. It promotes the forward movement of furnace conditions and is conducive to strengthening smelting and increasing pig iron production.
- Can reduce costs and increase efficiency. Reduce coke spraying from the taphole, and each furnace can spray less 10-20kg, saving energy: it can reduce the amount of iron in the slag by 1.0-1.5%.

Tap Hole Clay Production
The use effect of Tap Hole Clay is not only related to the quality of Clay itself, but also has a great relationship with changes in the smelted ore, changes in blast furnace parameters, front-furnace operators and equipment conditions, etc.
Terminology
During the on-site use of waterless taphole clay, the frequently used professional terms are:
TAP Hole Clay
Annual Production Capacity of 15,000 Tons
Serving Blast Furnaces of 100m³-2000m³
Rich On-site Experience and Service
Taphole depth
Refers to the distance between the outside of the taphole and the mud cannon formed by the gun mud in the furnace.
Tide iron mouth
Tide iron mouth means that the gun mud is not completely sintered, and the carbon-containing binder is not carbonized. The volatile matter explodes when the molten iron is exposed to high temperature during tapping, causing the molten iron slag to splash and even spray out from the iron mouth like a rocket out.
Iron seepage
When the taphole is opened, a small amount of molten iron flows out before the depth is reached, blocking the drill pipe due to iron seepage.
Large flow
The outflow of molten iron in the blast furnace is too large in a short period of time, causing the iron ditch to be unable to be discharged in time. The iron ditch is full and flows to the blast furnace platform.
Incoming wind
When the molten iron flows out, the liquid level in the furnace drops to the tap hole, causing the gas in the furnace to be discharged from the tap hole and emitting yellow smoke. This is what we call “incoming wind”.
Sintering properties
Tap hole clay can achieve different degrees of sintering at three temperature stages: low temperature, medium temperature, and high temperature. The iron mouth can be blocked in time, and a large enough mud bag can be formed in the furnace to protect the bricks lining the furnace. role.
Adhesion and plasticity
The new pothole clay should have good adhesion and plasticity with the old pothole mud in the hole. When the pothole mud is under the action of external force, it will deform but not crack; when the external force is removed, it can still maintain its shape. The shape remains unchanged, making the old and new gun clay form a whole, preventing iron seepage and leakage caused by the existence of cracks, affecting blast furnace tapping and safety accidents in front of the furnace, thereby protecting the taphole.
FerrumX TAP HOLE CLAY REFRACTORY COMPANY
FerrumX was founded by my grandfather in 1989. The performance of tap hole clay directly affects the safe operation of the blast furnace. As blast furnaces become larger, operate with higher wind pressure, and discharge more slag iron, the quality requirements for tap hole clay to effectively block the tap hole become increasingly stringent.
To ensure our tap hole clay meets the demands of blast furnace operation, we collaborate with the Refractory Materials Research Institute. Our developers of waterless tap hole clay have conducted extensive research on binders and additives, ultimately developing the formula for a waterless tap hole clay with a robust structure.
Beyond meeting physical and chemical requirements, our anhydrous taphole clay also exhibits excellent stability in high-temperature environments. Through various studies, we can customize waterless tap hole clay for blast furnace tapholes according to customer needs, ensuring reliable stability.

Blast furnace services – restoration clay
With the continuous changes in blast furnace smelting, the furnace bottom temperature frequently rises before the overhaul period. The temperature increase in some furnace bottoms is much higher than the upper limit of 200°C, and even reaches over 400°C, which is more than twice the upper limit, seriously threatening the production of blast furnaces.
When this happens, most manufacturers use traditional techniques such as reducing smelting intensity, protecting the furnace with vanadium-titanium ore, and grouting. But this can only treat the symptoms, and some improper use will affect the smooth operation of the blast furnace. DRM has been working with manufacturers for many years to implement drilling water and then cooling technology to deal with high blast furnace bottom temperatures, successfully solving this technical problem that affects blast furnace production.
The bottom of the blast furnace is cooled by water through drilled holes. The temperature of the bottom of the furnace can be reduced by 150℃-200℃, and production can continue. This not only avoids unplanned overhaul of the blast furnace and saves millions of dollars in overhaul costs, but also solves major hidden dangers and ensures production. It can be said that it kills two birds with one stone. Our company is willing to cooperate sincerely with friends in the iron-making industry to solve the problems of blast furnace production.
